Updates 17 Dec 2017.
Hong Kong has many analogue film shops. I went to a few during my 5-day trip to Hong Kong recently. From my first impression, the analogue film shops there have got more variety of cameras, and many of them look very new and well-maintained.
For example, I find it difficult to find a well-maintained Rolleiflex or any other brands of TLR cameras in Singapore. The shops here mostly have only two to three TLR and they look like they have gone to war. Haha. However in HK, you can see a whole row of Rolleiflex and many more baby Rolleiflex, all looking shiny. That’s my next upgrade 🙂
Anyway, without much further ado, below is the list of shops you can buy films in Hong Kong:
1. Dot-Well Photo Workshop
Dot-Well is my favourite shop in Hong Kong to buy films. Why? In my opinion, they are cheaper. Their price list for films is here. Furthermore, they have Tudorcolor as of December 2016, the expired film that is no longer in production. This film has got really nice effect, trust me, so stock up while you can.
Most importantly, they have the stamp collection card where for one film purchased, you receive a stamp. Upon collection of 10, you can use it to redeem HKD10 off your developing + scanning. That means, you save HKD100 if you developed 10 films (cumulative).
Address: G/F 44 Carnarvon Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.
Nearest MTR: Tsim Sha Shui.
2. I-m-ageplayground Camera Shop
Imageplayground is another shop you can try. They have a huge variety of films, from Lomography to the newest Australian film (with weird colour effect). The guys there are super friendly as well! Cheers!
Updates 17 Dec 2017: I went back to this store and found the shop to have changed a little. The staff was kind of ‘doesn’t give a f*ck I was there’ and also, their film variety has decreased.
Address: 3/F, 11 Queen Victoria Street, Central, HK
Nearest MRT: Central
3. Sunrise Professional Photofinishing
This shop is a good place to pop by after you have done shooting around Sham Shui Po. I didn’t buy films from them but I developed one of my films there, first and last time, because they are very expensive (HKD88).
Updtates 17 Dec 2017, I went to this shop last week and bought 2 rolls of film there. To my surprise, another film store in Mongkok is selling film at cheaper rate!
P/S They have super cute cat in the shop! 🙂
Address: B2 G/F 333 Lai Chi Kok Road, Kowloon, HK
Nearest MTR: Sham Shui Po
4. Sunrise Chung Pui Photo Supplies
I just have to list this shop down because I want to say AVOID THIS SHOP unless it is the last shop in the world. Haha. From the moment I step into the shop, I didn’t like the vibe. When I asked the ladyboss if they have Tudorcolor, the male boss replied saying only those low class supermarket sell this.
Wow… In my opinion, only resourceful shop can manage to get hold of this rare films. If you also sell films that other shops have, unless you are cheaper, I don’t see why you are high class. Anyway, I guess this shop mainly sell digital and only have a small section selling film rolls. I might go (reluctantly) if I don’t have any film technical question to ask.
Address: Walk up Pottinger Street in Central and you will see it.
5. SHOWA lab
Updates 17 Dec 2017
One year later after this blog post, I went to Hong Kong again.
This time round, I was a little lazy in exploring film shops. However, I did go to a very cool film lab.
The staff in this lab definitely know what they are doing as compared to the usual commercial film shops (who just randomly hire random people to run the machine).
They have 2 branches in Hong Kong: Mongkok and Causeway Bay. Google Map them, they are located at extremely convenient locations!
SHOWA has rich varieties of film and they are priced reasonably. I love SHOWA!
Hope this post is useful for you fellow filmshooter! If you know any other shops, let me know!
